Basketball Up, But NFL Still Leads for TV Watch-Time

Welcome to our weekly snapshot of TV by the numbers, highlighting the most-watched shows and networks for January 22-28, with insights from Inscape, the currency-grade smart TV ACR data provider and data technology division of Vizio. Data is linear, live TV only and includes all episode types (new and reruns). Rankings are by percent share duration (i.e., time spent watching).

Sunday’s NFL conference championships, which saw the 49ers beat the Lions and the Chiefs emerge victorious over the Ravens, captured 7.99% of all live TV watch-time during the week. That’s a slight increase from the 2023 conference championships, which had a 7.31% viewership share across its respective week.  

A few more insights around the most-watched TV programs last week:

  • NBA and college basketball both increased watch-time week-over-week: College games increased from 1.42% to 1.75% and remains in second place, while NBA jumped from 0.97% to 1.39% and moves from fourth to third on the ranking. 

  • NFL commentary programming saw notable gains, with NFL on Fox Postgame, which previously wasn’t in the top 50 programs, taking No. 11, while The NFL Today moves from No. 44 to No. 19. 

  • Elsewhere in sports, PGA Tour golf lands at No. 1 with a 0.52% viewership share, just ahead of the Australian Open (0.51%). 

  • Syndicated sitcoms Friends and The Big Bang Theory both made gains, with the former moving from No. 14 to No. 10 week-over-week, while the latter takes No. 6 (up from No. 9).
