Big Mouth's Historical Revenue Contribution to Netflix

Ahead of its seventh-season premiere, Netflix has officially renewed the raunchy animated sitcom Big Mouth for an eighth and final season. As such, it will officially become the longest-running scripted series in terms of seasons for the market-leading streamer best known for its fire hose approach to content. That is a remarkable accomplishment, but perhaps not a surprising one.

According to Parrot Analytics content valuation data, Big Mouth has contributed an estimated $153.7 million in global revenue for the platform since debuting in 2018 through last quarter. It’s also spawned a spinoff, Human Resources, that has been renewed for a second season. Given the increased scrutiny placed on Netflix’s lucrative mega-deals with producers in recent years, its overall pact with animation production company Titmouse has quietly become one of its best bang-for-buck values in a less expensive and growing genre.

The share of US audience demand for the animation genre has ballooned from 6.7% in January 2020 to 10.3% as of March 2023 while sitcoms were the third most in-demand subgenre in the US in Q4 ’22. Plus, seven of the top 10 titles viewers watched alongside Big Mouth last quarter were on Netflix, suggesting the animated comedy is a strong retention driver.

In Big Mouth, Netflix has found a critically acclaimed gem that addresses important programming niches and extends a user’s stay within the Netflix ecosystem all without breaking the bank. In terms of its multifaceted contributions, it’s exactly the sort of lower cost, higher upside title every streamer wants in its library.
