Here Are The Top Retailers By Foot Traffic Heading Into The Holiday Shopping Season

The holiday shopping season is fast approaching, and believe it or not it’s not all online…  people still shop in-person at actual stores.

Where does this antiquated phenomenon occur, you may ask? Well, ad intelligence company App Science has some answers. First, let’s look at the retailers themselves. Where shoppers go most in many respects depends on which part of the country they live.

In the West, Target is the leading retailer, with Walmart placing third. But Walmart leads everywhere else in the country.

Here’s the breakdown:

West

  1. Target

  2. Nordstrom

  3. Walmart

  4. Tumi

  5. Macy’s

Mid West

  1. Walmart

  2. Marshalls

  3. Target

  4. Kohl’s

  5. Big Lots

South

  1. Walmart

  2. Target

  3. Kohl’s

  4. Five Below

  5. Belk

North East

  1. Walmart

  2. Tumi

  3. Marshall

  4. Kohl’s

  5. Target

Putting the retailers aside, App Science also looked at which stats saw the most foot traffic. To best determine this, the company focused on the category that lends itself most to in-person shopping—clothes.

It found 40% of all in-person shopping for clothing took place in five states:

  1. Florida — 10.66%

  2. New York — 9.15%

  3. Texas — 8.9%

  4. California — 6.1%

  5. Pennsylvania — 4.79%

This is all based on data collected from App Science’s “household graph” database, which collects location data provided by millions of opted-in mobile device owners to match mobile apps with the IP addresses of similarly opted-in smart TVs. The result is a snapshot of not only viewers, but their interests and activity as well, resulting in a more precise look at in-store shopping trends.
