The highly-anticipated 2022 World Cup kicked off Sunday, Nov. 20, with hosting country Qatar losing to Ecuador 2-0. But the tournament is just getting started: Monday saw three matches: England vs. Iran, Netherlands vs. Senegal and the United States vs. Wales, with many more to come over the next few weeks.

Inscape, the leading currency-grade smart TV ACR data provider and the data technology division of VIZIO, examined live, linear viewership across both the English and Spanish-language telecasts and found that for Nov. 20-21, the World Cup accounted for 2.17% of all minutes watched, second only to NFL games (16.90% of minutes watched across Sunday and Monday).

  • Looking specifically at Nov. 20, the World Cup accounted for 0.92% of minutes watched that day.

  • For Nov. 21, World Cup telecasts accounted for 3.69% of watch-time.
